This small book, 'In the footsteps of Gestel', was published with the exhibition 'The Secret of Gestel', with a contribution by Caroline Roodenburg about her research and a colorful Gestel walk through Bergen by Karin Evers. Although Gestel only settled in Bergen in 1921, his Portrait of a Woman is linked to the artists' village. The painting comes from the collection of the Bergen patron Piet Boendermaker, which is confirmed by a self-described label on the back. Who the person portrayed is remains a secret for the time being. With his great passion, Leo Gestel was an inspiration for his colleagues in Bergen and beyond. He painted Portrait of a Woman at a time when he was experimenting and developing his very own version of Cubism and Futurism.
